Reliance Industries owned Viacom18 won the BCCI media rights for the domestic and international games to be played in India. Viacom18 has won the media rights for both television as well as digital platforms.
The media firm has bagged the rights for a total amount of Rs 5963 crore for 88 matches. This translates to a collective per-match value of roughly Rs 67.8 crore – close to 13 percent higher than the Rs 60.18 crore paid by Disney Star in the last cycle.
The previous media rights were with Disney Star India. In 2018, Disney Star won the media rights for for Rs. 6,138 crore.
For the five years for September 2023 – March 2028, the bilateral cricket matches played in India will be broadcast on Sports18 while at the same time, they will be streamed on the JioCinema app.
The media rights were available in two packages. Package A, which is for TV, has a base price of Rs. 20 crore per match. Package B, which is for digital and the rest of the world, has the base price set at Rs. 25 crore for one match.
The broadcast cycle starting from September 2023 till March 2028 will have around 88 international matches which could go up to 102.
The current rights cycle will begin with the three-match India-Australia ODI series in September which will serve as the perfect dress rehearsal for the Cricket World Cup 2023.
Other than IPL’s digital rights, they also hold TV rights for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), SA20, Cricket South Africa rights, Moto GP, La Liga, Major League Cricket (MLC), NBA, Serie A among many others.
